We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. Col. 1:28
In the winter of 1972, a young man sat in a darkened Boston theatre and watched an unusual story unfold on the stage before him. The story was unusual not just because of the manner in which it was told – nine actors and a clown laughing, crying and singing their way through a 2,000 year old tale. It was unusual because it caused the watching young man to consider, for the first time, that perhaps he had been wrong about wanting absolutely nothing to do with the main figure in the story: Jesus Christ. No amount of sermonizing or witnessing had been able to penetrate the young man’s heart in the same way as did the presentation of Godspell on a Boston stage. Four months later the young man surrendered his life to Jesus and began a decades-long journey with the Creator of the universe. But it all started with the fallow ground of a hard heart being broken up by the message of a play that had slipped through a young man’s defenses...
“...the play's the thing Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King.” – Hamlet, Act II, scene 2
That is why Calvary Players exists. Headed up by that same (no longer young) man, with the invaluable assistance of a few “right hands,” this troupe is the result of our belief that a dramatic presentation can gain entrance to a heart that may be hardened against other forms of communication.
How many of us have been moved by a play or sketch to laughter, tears, empathy, or judgment – only to realize that those responses were directed as much toward ourselves as those on the stage? It is this aspect of live theater that makes it a worthwhile endeavor for Christians to pursue.
The Calvary Players have been doing just that since the early 1990’s.
We desire to primarily do two things:
- present stories of hope and redemption that demonstrate – or encourage people to consider – the impact that Christ can make in their lives.
- maintain a high standard of excellence in the presentation of those stories, thus freeing the audience to willingly participate by allowing a tale well told to touch their hearts.
Our particular “niche” in the South Sound theater scene is the fusion of these into many evenings of thoughtful entertainment.
• We present sketches and plays during regular church services and other special occasions.
• We present full-length plays dealing truthfully and hopefully with the human condition: namely, we are broken inhabitants of a broken world, desperately in need of that redemption which is offered by the God of all hope, through His Son Jesus Christ.
• The stories we tell may be in the form of: dramas, comedies, musicals, or some combination thereof.
• They may explicitly declare Christ and His glory, or merely whisper the possibility of His presence.
• They will always elicit discussion. Sometimes the production will be a dessert theater at Calvary Chapel; sometimes it will be offered at a venue outside of the church.
Calvary Players draws on the talents of many different types of people, both on stage and behind the scenes. Toward this end, we:
•conduct ongoing training and workshops to equip our members – as well as those interested in just “taking a look” -- to minister effectively through drama, and to grow in their craft and in their relationship with God.
• believe that drama is a worthwhile tool for all ages; thus we involve young people several times a year.
• produce a high quality children’s musical every Christmas season
• produce a full-length play for junior and senior high school actors.
• Host a two-week musical theater camp each summer for junior and senior high actors, involving several hours of instruction in acting and singing, and the rehearsal and performance of a well-known musical.
